CT1 recruitment review report

In February 2023, administrative errors came to light which had an impact on CT1 Anaesthetics Recruitment. 

We are very sorry that this happened and for the impact it had on those applicants who were affected.  We fully appreciate this was a critical time for applicants and our immediate priority was to apologise to those impacted and reassure them that we were working hard to correct the issue. 

It is important that applicants can have full confidence when applying so we agreed that a review would be undertaken by the Medical and Dental Recruitment and Selection (MDRS) and Royal College of Anaesthetics with trainee representation to look into what happened and what could be done better in future. 

Following the review we put in place an action plan which includes staff training, a review of resourcing and ways of working.  

We will continue to monitor all our processes and are committed to making sure that applicants have the best possible experience when applying for Anaesthetics speciality training and learning lessons when we fall short of expectations.

Anaesthetics Recruitment: Significant Incident Report - December 2021:

In late 2021 Health Education England carried out a full internal review into the administrative and technical issues which affected the Anaesthetics recruitment round.

We apologised to the applicants affected for any inconvenience and worry caused and accepted we fell short on this occasion.

Lessons have been learned since the investigation took place and changes to processes and procedures were implemented shortly after the review in accordance with the recommendations made in the report. We continue to quality assure and monitor recruitment processes.

We are committed to making sure that applicants have the best possible experience when applying for medical speciality training.
